What are memory boxes?

The Butterfly Box

I love how memories can be held in the objects we collect and treasure.

When I was little I began making collages using ticket stubs, labels and other items I found interesting. Then I discovered the work of Joseph Cornell and Peter Blake, who demonstrated the art of capturing a person, story or dream in box assemblages and collages.

Inspired by their creations, I started to work in 3D and produce memory boxes to house my collections and tell stories.

Memory boxes can be the physical manifestation of our inner world, our story, journey and most importantly, our sacred memories. Like a treasure box, they can hold objects, photographs and trinkets. What sets a drawer and average box apart from a memory box is in the curation of these objects; all thoughtfully displayed to carry the narrative.

The piece above shows different life cycles, but like all art, is open to interpretation. The joy of a memory box is that we can keep on returning to it and find something new.
